Transfer Station Operational Procedures
After the load has been tipped, all tipping and hook lift equipment must be secured in the
travelling position by the driver before leaving the building in a safe manner.
Under no circumstances must any of the MRF floor staff help a driver with his skip
chains or climb onto any lorry unless instructed to do by the Site Foreman or your
Manager.
Once tipped, the waste must be segregated and screened to remove as much reclaimable
materials as possible, such as – metal, cardboard, hardcore, soils, wood etc.
Scrap metals must be placed into the scrap metal containers provided on site.
Cardboard must be removed from the waste and placed in the containers provided on site.
All Construction and demolition waste must be processed through the recycling plant.
• Each waste category must be stored separately to prevent contamination of inert
material upon removal from site.
• Once sorted and stored in the appropriate area, the waste must be loaded by use of
the mobile plant on site.
• During loading, nobody is allowed to be around the vehicle being loaded. This will
prevent injury from waste falling from either the grab/bucket or the trailer.
• The waste must be stacked into the trailer and slightly compacted to ensure a tidy
load, which will not move within the trailer during transit to Landfill or an alternative
recycling facility..
• Upon completion of loading, the driver must be notified to sheet the load before
entering the public highway (this is a requirement by Law). Nobody is to climb onto
the load at any time. If any material hanging over the trailer or body cannot be
removed by mechanical means then the load must be ejected and reloaded, no
exceptions.
• Every load that is removed from site must be accompanied by a dispatch ticket stating
the date, the vehicle registration, a description of the waste, destination of the waste,
the weight of the waste, and the drivers name.
• It is the aim of the company to empty each transfer station of biodegradable waste at
the end of each working week. The control of this aim is the responsibility of each
site manager and the company Transport Manager. It must be noted that this is a
company aim, not a licence condition.
