✓ TJ issued hearing protection – Prevent long term hearing complications, such as hearing loss or
tinnitus, due to exposure to high noise levels for prolonged periods. The use of headphones
                    does not protect your hearing.
✓ FFP3 face fitted RPE – Prevent long term health issues such as lung cancer, silicosis, or chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust exposure
                    for prolonged periods.

If you see your colleague not wearing their PPE or RPE challenge them or report it as a near

                    Transfer Station Environmental Issues SSW

Common sense must prevail at all times. If you feel that something at work is dangerous
or could cause a threat to human health or the environment, you must bring it to the
               attention of your manager.

Due to the unclean nature of the waste we have to control, there will always be an element
of stray litter, dust, mud, odours and pests. As a responsible company, we must persist
in keeping the working environment as clean as possible. We also have a requirement by
Law not to pollute the environment with any of the above problems. To help combat these
common problems, the following procedures need to be followed:-

LITTER – Litter tends to be blown out of the waste building or fall off various vehicles.
These items of litter need to be picked up and returned to the building
wherever possible. This is a never-ending task, which requires constant
monitoring by all operatives and management. At the end of each working
day, a litter patrol needs to be carried out to check the yard and site fences
for stray litter, which, if found, must be returned to the waste building. There are road
sweepers on site, which will also vacuum litter off the floor.

DUST – Dust comes from two areas on site. Firstly, dust can
come from the waste reception area either from the tipping or
handling of the waste. To protect yourself, all the site machinery
cabs are fully air conditioned so that you can work the
machinery inside the building in a clean dust free environment.
If you need to leave the cab and enter into a dusty area, dust masks are provided as part
of your personal protective equipment and it is strongly recommended that you wear
them. Secondly, dust forms from mud travelling out of the building, drying and turning
into dust. This can create a significant environmental problem. To prevent dust forming
across the yard, a watering and cleaning regime needs to be put into place. This regime
needs to include constant wetting of the yard using the sprinkler systems, and full use of
the road sweeper provided at each site to stop mud travelling too far out of the waste
building. The local roads 25 metres either side of the site entrance need to be swept at
least once a week to collect any stray mud and dust where there is no lengthy access
road, even if the mud and dust has not come from our premises. This also aids in good
neighbour relations, as we are seen to be keeping the local environment clean. Some of
our Transfer Stations have waste screening plant on site. This process also creates a
dust problem. As part of the Waste Management Licence conditions to control dust, a
