35 Transfer Station Safety Instructions
1. The transfer of waste can be a safe procedure if carried out correctly. If you are
unaware of the potential dangers, it can become an extremely dangerous exercise.
You must follow the safe working procedures set out below at all times. If
you are unsure, or need any points explaining to you, please ask your manager for
clarifying advice.
2. Regular Health & Safety meetings are held at Charity Farm to discuss all safety
issues. At these meetings Managers and designated site operatives will discuss
possible improvements, near misses and training issues. These meetings are
designed to improve the Health and safety culture within your working
environment.
3. All near misses must be reported to your Site Manager. These include near
collisions with site machinery, buildings, customers vehicles, persons on foot within
the site, or any incident where any person could have been injured. All near misses
are recorded, reviewed and kept on file. Any changes necessary to prevent a re-
occurrence will be initiated immediately.
4. All Transfer Station Managers/Foreman must read and fully understand the Waste
Management Licence, Working Plan, EMS (Environmental Management System)

understood, you must ask Mr J Higgins or Mr J Gosling to explain these points
fully.

explained to them upon arrival and a hard hat, high visibility jacket/vest, safety
glasses and safety boots loaned to them for the duration of their visit.

and other buildings. No employee may smoke on site at any time unless in an
agreed smoking area these will be at least 10 metres away from any building or
flammable material.
8. Should you see a visitor / customer smoking on site please instruct them to
extinguish their cigarette, cigar or pipe immediately. This also applies to
employees, visitors or customers smoking within their vehicles. You must report
any smoking incident to your Site Manager please.
9. All operatives are supplied with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), for use
whilst carrying out your daily work. You must always wear your PPE whilst on site.
Always wear your protective gloves when handling waste. If your PPE equipment
becomes defective or excessively worn, you must report it to your site manager
who will arrange replacement equipment for you.
