34 Using Hand Tools and Portable Electric Tools

Note: When using any hand tool or portable electric tool, or compressed air
tool it is important that the operator follows the safe system of work.

All equipment MUST be certified before use either by having a PAT
test, certificate of manufacturer’s warranty.

Staff should ensure that tools MUST be checked for damage before use. Cables
MUST be inspected for damage, cuts, frayed. If any damage is found the equipment
is not to be used and report the defected items to your Manager.

When using extension leads never let them sit in water . Avoid causing trip hazards
especially when crossing walkways.

All electric tools used should be 110v. If this is not possible then any 240 volt used
MUST plug into a RCD circuit breaker.

Check that the safety devices work and that the tool switches off when the trigger is
released.

Only trained and authorised staff who have undergone an abrasive wheels course,
can use the grinder. All guards MUST be fitted and secured properly before use.
Keep both hands on the tool and ensure that you have a firm grip.

When using a ‘Stanley’ type knife to trim or cut the conveyor belt care MUST be taken
to avoid injury. A sharp blade should be used to avoid unnecessary force which is
needed to achieve the cut and is less likely to slip. Always use the safety gloves that
are cut resistant and if possible cut away from the body where possible always cut
the rubber on a flat surface.

When using hammers the user should ensure a firm grip on the handle if striking
punches or chisels. Make sure there are no burrs on them that can strike off. Safely
glasses should be worn.

Check all airlines before use. Make sure ends are secure. Hoses are good, no splits,
holes, cuts. Use the correct fittings for tools used. Never direct compressed air onto
any part of your body and wear ear defenders when using impact guns.

Always use the correct spanner, socket, small hand tool for the job being undertaken.

When painting, spraying always use the correct PPE for material being used i.e. air
fixed masks, latex gloves and in a well-ventilated area. If in doubt refer to COSSH
Data sheets for the materials being used.

When using the steam cleaner, pressure washer use the correct PPE. Electric cable
should be checked for damage, correct plug fitted and connected to a RCD circuit
breaker. Cleaning hose should be checked for leaks, damage and wear. The lance
trigger should be in good condition.

If all the above controls are followed then the risk of injury to persons has been brought
down to as low as is reasonably practical.
