33 Using Slings, Chains and Lifting Equipment

Note: When using slings, chains and lifting this safe system of work should be used.

                1. All equipment used for lifting comes under the lifting operations and lifting equipment.
Regulations 1998 also know as LOLER and equipment MUST be tested in
                    accordance with the regulations.

                2. The proposed lift MUST be assessed by a competent person before lifting. The
correct sized slings or chains used and where to attach the equipment also identified
if it is a one off lift. A separated method statement must be written out before the lift.

                3. All equipment MUST be checked for the safe working load and any damage before
                    starting the lift.

                        ▪ Slings – check there are not rips, cuts or stitching coming undone on the
sling. Also tag with SWL (Safe Working Load) and the date.

                        ▪ Shackles – check that it is not dislocated and threads not
                               damaged.

                        ▪ Chains – check hooks and catches are not damaged or
stretched links. Also tag with SWL (safe Working Load) and
                               the test date.

                        ▪ Chain Blocks – check hook and chain links are not stretched and
damaged. Also SWL (Safe Working Load).

                        ▪ Lever pull lifts – check hook and chain is not stretched. Also SWL (Safe
                               Working Load)

                4. Do not position yourself under any suspended load.

                5. If the load needs to be controlled attach and use a guide rope.

                6. Any relevant Risk Assessment or safe system of work should be read and understood
before lifting. An authorised Banks man should control the lift.

                7. After completing the lift, checks should be made on the equipment for any new
damage. If there is it needs to be reported to the Manager, if not, return equipment
                    to its correct location.

If all the above controls are followed then the risk of injury to persons has been brought
down to as low as is reasonably practical.

EXERCISE CARE AND VIGILANCE AT ALL TIMES.
