32 Manual Handling

Manual handling is carried out for a lot of activities.

                      1. Manual handling training is carried out in the way of toolbox talks.
                      2. Loads to be lifted and carried over a long distance should be carried
                           mechanically.

                      3. If in doubt a Supervisor or Manager must be consulted before the lift can take
                           place.

Manual handling is the term used to describe the lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying of
loads using one or more parts of the body.

Wherever possible, manual-handling operations should be avoided by redesigning work
tasks to remove the need for manual handling. Where this is impracticable, an assessment
of the load, task, individual and environment should be undertaken. If you are unsure how
to carry out any manual handling task then please ask your supervisor/ manager for advice
            and instruction.

Below is a procedure to help prevent injuries:

                       a) Lifting and carrying

Can lifting or moving the load be avoided? If not:

                       b) Examine the object

                        • Check weight, centre of gravity, stability
                        • Are there any sharp edges?

                        • Check with your supervisor / manager

                       c) Plan the task

                        • Consult your supervisor / manager

                        • Plan a route free from tripping or slipping hazards
                        • Provide opportunities for rest and recovery

                        • Know where to unload
