Meet new Recruiters — Sharon and John Schaaf
John and Sharon are our newest recruiters. They
joined Friends in 2001 and are very active members
of the Rock magazine committee,
the Tortoise Habitat and the
Landscape Team. Sharon writes a
regular column, Sharon’s Slant,
for the Rock and also serves as
the Articles Editor.
Even though they volunteer in
multiple areas, they are commit-
ted to helping our membership grow.
Your Amazing Accomplishments
Since our fiscal year ended on September 30, it is
time to share some of Friends of Red Rock Canyon’s
significant membership accomplishments.
We ended the year with over 360 memberships.
Ninety new individuals and families joined us; of
these, ten were gifts and 29 were sponsored member-
ships.
Friends added a new plan to provide a one-year
complimentary family membership for new U.S.
citizens. This was implemented to welcome those
becoming citizens at the Naturalization Ceremony
held in March 2014 at Red Rock Canyon. Six new
citizens joined Friends of Red Rock Canyon as a
result. We also decided to combine our Annual Photo
Contest with recruitment initiatives and received
seven new memberships.
A new Electronic Membership level was approved
by Friends members at the May 2014 quarterly meet-
ing. This level will be directed to social media users
with limited membership benefits. The membership
fee will be $10 per year with electronic distribution of
the Rock magazine, monthly newsletters and other

other people who are working

met through previous issues of this
magazine all report that they enjoy
representing Friends, meeting visi-
tors and talking about “Who We
Are.” It is even better when they are able to sign up a
new member.

Our volunteers devoted over 21,000 hours of
their lives in the past year to maintain, preserve
and improve the Canyon. This accomplishment is
the equivalent of over 10 people working 40-
hours-per-week for the entire year. Wow! See

We still need to put more effort into recruiting
members. As a Friends member, please help us to
increase our numbers through sponsoring and gift
memberships. Holidays are quickly approaching,
so remember Friends when preparing your gift
lists. If you are interested in recruiting once a
month at the Visitor Center, please let me know.
The more recruiters we have, the better for adding
to our volunteer base.
