1. IPS adalah sebagai “those” (studies) whose subject matter relates to
the organization and development organisasi human society and to

man as member of social group” (Binning & Binning, 1952:2)
2. IPS adalah “the study of man information society information the past,

present and future. Social studies emerges as a subject of prime

importance for study information school (Mathias, 1973:20-21).
3. IPS adalah “those portions aspect of the social sciences that have been

selected and adapted for use informasi the school or the other
instruction situation. Dikatakan juga “the social a studies are the sosial

(Wesley, 1952:9).
4. Social studies the study of people carried on in other to help students

understand themselves and others in a varieties of societies in different
places and at different times as individual and group seek to meet the

needs through many institution as those human beings search for a

satisfying a personal philosophy and the good society (Kenworthy,
1952).

5. The social studies as a part of the elementary school curriculum draw
subjectmatter content from the social science, history, sociology,

political, science,social psychology, philosophy, anthropology and
economic. (Jarolimek,1967:4)

Jadi IPS adalah ilmu pengetahuan yang memadukan sejumlah konsep pilihan

dari cabang-cabang ilmu sosial dan ilmu lainnya serta kemudian diolah
berdasarkan prinsip pendidikan dan didaktik untuk dijadikan program

pengajaran pada tingkat persekolahan.

B. Hakekat IPS
Hakekat dari IPS terutama jika disorot dari anak didik adalah sebagai

pengetahuan yang akan membina para generasi muda belajar ke arah positif

yakni mengadakan perubahan-perubahan sesuai kondisi yang diinginkan oleh
dunia modern atau sesuai daya kreasi pembangunan serta prinsip-prinsip dasar

dan sistem nilai yang dianut masyarakat serta membina kehidupan masa depan
