LITERACY
READING: (in the content areas, tutoring, mathematics, language, science, social
studies, family literacy, etc.) Number of Sorors: 5 Number of Students: 35 Description
of the Activity: Sorors engaged elementary school students at P.S. 161 in literacy activities that
incorporate the Fall Season. Sorors read stories about Fall to the students and involved them in
discussions about the signs of Fall. The children compared and contrasted the different seasons
through discussion. Sorors worked with the students to complete art activities and led them in a
sing-a-long of Fall themed songs. The culminating activity was sharing in healthy snacks in
celebration of Fall.
AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY: No. of Sorors: 22 Youth: 0 Others: 8
Description of the Activity: The Sorors of Theta Chapter held a Celebration African American
Heritage following our General Meeting on February 2, 2019. Sorors, Anthropos, and guests
participated in the event attired in various African clothing. They enjoyed a presentation
conducted by Sorors which celebrated Afro-American women Past and Present that served in the
military. The presentation was well received by the group. The presentation was followed by
music portraying our "Roots" and a healthy “southern” lunch with culinary delights cooked with
a healthy twist.

Description of the Activity: Throughout the year the Technology/Computer Committee provides
technology workshops that target the senior Sorors in navigating the computer to ascertain, send
and write an email. Sorors were also engaged securing an email address if they did not have
one. If they had one, they were placed in another group to learn how to use the various features
of their smartphones and technology devices.

Description of the Activity: March 2019 Read Across America Activity, Sorors celebrated Dr.
Seuss' Birthday with students at P.S. 16. Sorors read selections from Dr. Suess to 1st and 2nd
graders. Students participated in drawing their favorite characters from the Dr, Suess collections
and discussing their favorite Dr, Seuss stories.
