USE OF STEP LADDERS
SUMMARY OF CONTROL MEASURES:-
● Use the safest means of access for the task, if
step ladders are used they must be Class 1,
to EN 131 standards for industrial use;
● Use podium steps in preferences to step
ladders;
● Ladders must be placed on firm level
floors/ground;
● Inspect step ladders BEFORE use, do not use
faulty step ladders;
● Stiles, treads, locking bars, anti-slip feet etc.
must be in good order;
● Open out stiles and engage locking bars;
● Work within the stiles, do not overreach;
● Do not work side on, work facing the treads;
● Do not stand on the top platform or use the
top 2 treads;
● Do not use near mezzanine floors or any
work area above scaffolding guardrails;
● Refer to HSE Guidance Indg 455.
