I’ve been with Essex for 3 ½ years now, starting as an RPM and now a Sr. RPM
The thing I like best about Essex is the teams. The collaboration and everyone working
together to bring success across all platforms of our business. The work is unique and
mostly non-repetitive. You must be prepared for anything and it keeps you on your
toes. Never a dull day!
I think my strength is in people. I know that my success relies on others and I balance that
Charla Neta with my leadership style. There may be an easier way or a quicker way to get things done
but the long-term goal is to ensure my people can maintain driving that consistency.

The most important leadership lesson I have learned is to ask for feedback and create a
Property Manager-
culture where people are comfortable volunteering it. Most of the missed targets result
NorCal from not getting the right feedback from stakeholders. If only I had asked or if only, I had
given them time to speak up freely I could have avoided them. Never get comfortable – If
you are comfortable you need to find new ways to grow yourself.
When planning for future I ask myself “what are the results I seek.” Then backing into the
“how”, involving all stakeholders on potential challenges / roadblocks to ensure it still
makes sense. Finally, I try to get someone with a different perspective to challenge me on
what else I’m missing or where else I may be wrong.
My personal core values are doing the right thing. What we do affects people, whether it’s
our resident, our associate or our shareholders. Being transparent. Leaders should be
(mostly) predictable.
Fun Fact: I enjoy pushing myself in all things. I seek fun, odd, strange ways to fill my time
to balance the complex reality of day to day life. During Covid I’ve taking up cooking so
that counts too I guess, but I can’t wait for indoor dining to come back in full swing!
