of the nagari which is very democratic. The ruler's
power lies in the three core luhaks and the overland
area. Therefore, in Minangkabau there is only a natural
king whose power is more moral in nature, on the other
hand it is not a king who is in charge of government. A
leader is considered great (gadang) if he has the
character of being high dianjuang not high gadang,
diamba gadang not gadang gadang. That is, a person is
considered good at leading, if he is good at
accommodating opinions and is oriented to the interests
of the people in accordance with alua jo patuik
(reasonable rails and boundaries), on the contrary, he
does not walk on his own accord.
The conclusion is that in adat there are two streams of
leadership, namely democracy and aristocracy (nationality). The
two powers influence harmoniously in society. Both are mutually
controlling and are a force of attraction.
F. The Origin of Minangkabau
1. Minangkabau According to Tambo (Historyography)
To begin the discussion of the Minangkabau natural
tambo, it is best to first explain the meaning of the term tambo.
