Literacy Day
Literacy Day
Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen
in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make
sense of the world. Literacy week is designed to raise
awareness about the importance of reading and to
inspire our students to make reading part of their
daily routines. Language and literacy activities for
children are one of our favourite topics because they
support their cognitive development, improve their
creativity, build their language skills, help improve their
concentration and problem solving skills.
At EPG, the Literacy Week Celebration gave our students the
opportunity to enter the magical world of stories. Students
and teachers dressed up as their favourite story characters.
Mini stations have been set up with various stimulating
activities. Our students explored and enjoyed each activity related
to the literacy celebration such as:
• ‘Stick it Game!’ wherein children labelled some collected
items found in their classrooms or in the play area.
• Treasure Hunt! Children have searched around the
mini stations for hidden letter cards. They had to say
the sound or name the letter and write/colour it on a
recording sheet.
• Storytelling using hand/stick puppet with funny
voices or videos
• Storytelling with objects that matched with the book
• Storytelling using a basket with objects
• Children had drawn a picture and told a story
• Children enjoyed singing nursery rhymes
These activities are simple ways to make reading more
fun and to instil a love of reading in children, as an
extremely powerful learning source in Early Years.
