3.4 Sample and sampling procedures
A sample refers to a smaller group or subset of the population selected from the population (Borg
& Gall, 1990). The sample consisted of eight (8) full –time student teachers from UNAM main
campus. The researcher randomly selected eight (8) secondary schools from the Khomas region.
The researcher also took into cognisance of the geographical spread of the schools and therefore
randomly selected 5 urban schools and 3 schools from the outskirts of Khomas region. Due to the
Pandemic COVID-19 we could not get hold of all student teachers who did their teaching practice
in schools in Khomas region to participate in the research study.
3.5 Research Instruments
Since the study used qualitative methods, a research questionnaire was used for data collection.
This type of research instrument that was used is discussed as follow:
3.5.1 Questionnaires
Separate questionnaires which comprised of open-ended and close-ended questions for the student
teachers were used to collect data from them (Appendix 1 and 2). Gay, Mills and Airasian (2009)
indicated that questionnaires are useful in collecting data if well structured. The use of question-
naires in this study enabled the participants to express their opinions and experiences on the chal-
lenges student teachers encountered in teaching Poetry in English as a second language.
3.6 Data Collection Procedures
The researchers telephonically contacted the student teachers requesting permission to conduct the re-
search by using Google online forms. The researchers also contacted the participants to explain
the purpose of the study and arranged dates for the administering of the questionnaires to the stu-
dent teachers. The researchers administered the questionnaires to the 8 student teachers through
Google forms online platform and data was collected during the week as each student teacher
submitted the questionnaire at different day and time.
3.7 Data Analysis
Qualitative data was coded and then analysed using identified themes by means of Thematic and
Content Analysis (TCA) techniques. TCA approaches was employed because they are used to
formalise and contextualize the identification and development of themes. According to Anderson
(2014), TCA is a descriptive presentation of qualitative data. Ibrahim (2012) outlines that TCA is
