used to analyse classifications and present themes (patterns) that relate to the data. For the purpose
of this study, TCA will be used to analyse textual data and elucidate themes. Categories and themes
will be created in order to identify patterns in the data (Hamunyela, 2008). Analysis of the quali-
tative data will also include searching for relationships and patterns to get a holistic picture of what
the student at UNAM (Main campus) in Khomas Region teachers did differently to address the
challenges that student teachers encountered in teaching Poetry in English as a second language.
3.8 Ethical considerations
Ethical issues refer to conducting research in a manner that does not result in harming the partici-
pants in one way or the other. Sapsford and Jupp (2006) explain an ethical act as “doing no harm”
to research participants and the researcher must obtain the participants’ informed consent. Permis-
sion was obtained from the student teachers participants to complete the questionnaire questions.
The purpose of the study was explained to the participants and they were notified of how the in-
formation would be used. During the data collection process, the participants were informed of
their right not only to answer the questionnaire in confidence, but also to refuse to allow publica-
tion of any material that might harm them in any way. The American Sociological Association’s
(ASA’S) Code of Ethics sets forth the principles and the ethical standards that underlie sociolo-
gist’s professional responsibilities and conduct. The guidelines should be used as guidelines when
examining everyday professional activities. Ethical issues considered in this study are: assurance
of privacy, confidentiality and anonymity.
