Challenges in teaching poetry

This section presented the actual findings to achieve the objectives of the study. As outlined earlier,
the main aim of this study was to investigate the challenges experienced by student teachers in

teaching poetry in English as a second language focusing on UNAM students at the main campus
               in Windhoek, Khomas Region.

4.3.5 Learners’ interest in poetry lessons

The success of learners is determined by their interest in certain subjects (Namupala, 2013). The
study deemed it important to assess how much interest learners show in poetry lessons. Figure 5

presents the responses of student teachers to the question on learners’ interest in poetry lessons.

Figure 5 Learners' interest in poetry lessons
The study revealed that more than half of the respondents (64.7%) indicated that they have

observed that learners showed interest in learning poetry. However, 35.3% of the respondents

indicated that learners showed a lack of interest in learning poetry. From the results, it can be
concluded that there was a positive attitude among the learners towards learning poetry.

4.3.6 Clarity of the subject content and learning activities

The subject content and learning activities must be presented to the learners. This helps learners
understand the subject and score good marks at the end of the day. Figure 4.3.6 shows the extent

to which the subject content were presented to the learners according to the respondents.
