The majority of the respondents (64.7%) indicated that the time allocated to poetry lessons is not
enough. Only 35.3% of the student teachers indicated that they felt like the time allocated to poetry
lessons was enough. This raised a concern the respondents that the education managers and
curriculum designers to look into this issue seriously so that time and content or competencies to
be covered do go hand in hand. According to the information in chapter 2 literature review, it was
stated clearly by the Ministry of Education Arts and Culture that a specific number of poems, short
stories, and novels have to be completed within the given time so that learners master the
competencies before sitting for exams. However, this feedback is quite contrary to what the
Ministry has in the syllabus because the time allocated to teach poetry is less and not all
competencies could be covered.
