                                          2021 ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS
As you begin your journey into higher education and start making decisions as to how you plan to take your place in
“The American Experiment,” how will Clio record your choices and actions as they relate to the success of your commu-
nity and your country in these turbulent times? What would you like Clio to write about what you did to make a differ-
         ence?

                                                        FIRST PLACE

Angelina Nmi XU of Basking Ridge, New Jersey was awarded First place and therefore will receive a $3000 and a Na-
tional Sojourners Plaque. Garden State Chapter #438 sponsored the student.

On July 4th, 1776, the budding flames of Life, Liberty, and pursuit of Happiness ignited our country. However, the
advance towards freedom is not without setbacks - specifically, the right to life. Medical expenses are the #1 cause of
bankruptcy in America, stripping a person's right to life and happiness. I want Clio to etch in history, my efforts in ex-
         panding health equality.
The World Health Organization Constitution proclaims, "the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental
right of every human being." Understanding health as a human right necessitates that every person receives timely and
affordable healthcare. Yet, even in the US - a developed nation built on the premise of Life, Liberty, and Happiness -
one in four Americans skip medical care due to cost. Another 29% of Americans fail to take medications for the same
reason. These socioeconomic barriers run contrary to the vision of our nation.

However, this journey does not end. My ambitions include obtaining an MD/Ph.D. By paving the way for cutting-edge
medical research, I want Clio to record my innovations. I want Clio to record the number of treatments I create for fatal
diseases, the number of lives I save, and the medical costs I reduce. As a physician, I will become the pillars of support
         for my patients.

Throughout the centuries, the American Experiment defied all odds, extinguished the reigns of despotism, and flour-
ished. Our predecessors have laid the foundations for a stronger and freer nation. Now, it is our responsibility, and
providing healthcare to the sick is one step towards a more perfect Union.
