To pivot and change the direction that you are facing, push
your rear foot into the floor to generate force in a forward
motion. Redirect this force by rotating on the ball of your
lead foot so that your entire body makes a 90-degree
change in the angle you are currently facing.
You can also pivot to add reach to punches. Notice that in
your boxing stance, your rear hand is farther away from the
target than your lead hand. To compensate for the minor
shortage of reach, slightly pivot on the ball of the rear foot
so your toes change from pointing at a 45-degree angle to
pointing directly forward at your target. This rotating motion
when throwing a punch allows your hips and shoulders to
shift a few degrees forward, subsequently adding reach to
your rear hand.
Step off: Starting in your boxing stance, a step off occurs
when one foot steps away from point A to point B and then
back to point A while the other foot remains in its original
position throughout. As this motion occurs, your head and
body will no longer be directly in the center line of your
target. Place your body weight on the foot stepping off.
