Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
1 In the first rope make a loop with a
crossing turn, the short end to be on top.
2 Put the second rope on top of the loop,
the standing end to be opposite to the
standing end of the first rope.
3 Take the working end of the second rope
round behind the standing part of the first
rope and then over the short end.
4 The working end of the second rope
goes under the first rope, over itself, and
under the first rope again. This gives the
full over and under pattern of the carrick
bend.
5 The finished knot collapsed.
6 At far left can be seen the finished knot
with seized ends.
