Figure-of-Eight Loop

The figure-of-eight loop, also know as
the Flemish loop or double figure

eight, is much favored by climbers.
The figure-of-eight loop can simply be
made in the bight of the rope, but if

there is the need for the loop to go
round an item or through a ring, then

        the threading or doubling method
needs to be adopted. Climbers feel
that, whichever method is used, the

distinct shape and ease of tying means
that this loop knot is the least likely to

        be tied incorrectly. The distinctive
shape helps when the knot is checked.
In fact, if tied incorrectly it becomes

an overhand knot which, while not
ideal, is not a complete disaster. For

        best performance from the figure-of-
eight loop, always make sure that the

pair of lines he neat and flat within
        the knot.

        Method #1

1 With the rope doubled, bring the bight
round and over itself before going under
            the standing parts.

2 Put the bight down through the loop you
have created to complete a figure-of-

eight knot tied in doubled rope.
3 Work tight and even to finish the knot.
