Alpine Butterfly Knot
Sometimes called the lineman’s loop,
this knot can be tied quickly in the
middle of a climbing rope, and is ideal
for an attachment point for a third
climber to clip on between two other
climbers. The strain can be taken in
any of three directions, up or down
the rope or directly out from the rope.
1 Wrap the rope round
your hand giving three
turns across your
palm.
2 Take the left turn and
move it to the right
between the other two
turns.
3 Take what is now the
left turn and bring it
over the right two

turns, it should then
pass behind those two
turns to form the loop.
