Updating Report by the Archivist – No. 17
Published January 2016
OD Society War Memorial – Since the last meeting I have assisted our Secretary make a full written application for a grant from the War Memorial Trust (WMT) for the following:
• Complete professional cleaning of the War Memorial;
• repair of the broken and defective nosings to the steps of the Memorial;
• removal of the Verdigris off the obelisk;
• replacement of the WWI slate memorial covering surnames A to D.
In addition I have now received a quote from the stonemasons for the creation of two small slate memorials for Lieut Joseph Arthur Case for WWI and Major Kenneth Robert Smith Moorley for WWII.
Derby School Cadet Corps Reunion
Following on from the successful Inaugural Reunion on 3 September 2015 the Derby Telegraph published a full report under their Tuesday ‘Celebrations’ special supplement of 15 September.
Two old photographs from our archives were submitted along with the draft article which included a large group photograph of the CCF outside the Chapel in 1950 and the other of the whole band down on Parker’s Piece in June 1959
Andrew Polkey’s “A History of Derby School Cadet Corps – 1862 to 1973” As you are aware this was published on the same day as the reunion and I have been informed that both Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council Library Departments have purchased 4 copies and 3 copies respectively for their reference sections. Many copies have been purchased by former cadets for the cost price of £12.50 plus £2.00 postage and packing purposes. A signed copy by the author has been placed within our bookcase archives in Derby Grammar School library. Signed copies were made available by Andrew at the 2015 Annual Dinner and two copies given as raffle prizes.
Target of One thousand archive photographs reached in November.
Since the last Committee held in September 2015 we have had an amazing submission of previously unseen photographs – at least another thirty handed over to the archivist at the Cadet Corps reunion. This took us from 910 in September 2015 up to 975 and within another month by the end of October we reached 1000. I also included this news of reaching such a splendid target with another Bygones article written about two new old school caps being donated. At the September 2015 Committee I reported that I am being asked if OD’s may obtain a DVD of them all. May I again seek your considered thoughts and a decision please?
