Activity: Experiment to prove that water is necessary for the germination of a seed.
The main aim of the experiment was to demonstrate that water is necessary for the
germination of a seed. In order to demonstrate this, the materials used were – two
glass bowls, cotton wool, water, mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. Two bowls were
taken and a layer of cotton wool was placed in them. The first bowl had just the dry
cotton wool layer but in the second bowl, the cotton wool was moistened with water.
The seeds of mustard and fenugreek were placed on the cotton wool layer in both the
bowls and this setup was allowed to stand for one day. On the second day, the above
mentioned setup was demonstrated during the online class. The seeds in the first bowl
remained dry and did not germinate. The seeds in the second bowl on the moist cotton
wool layer had swollen by absorbing the water and had begun the process of
germination. This experiment proves that water is necessary for the germination of a
seed. The students enjoyed the experiment and were able to understand the concept
clearly.
