Exercise
Study the given cases related to some possible complications a patient might experience when having a
catheter.
1. Bladder Spasms
Bladder spasms may occur because of the body’s natural response to a foreign
object in the bladder. The catheter can irritate the bladder lining or cause
involuntary contractions.
Prevention:
✓ Use the smallest effective catheter size to minimize irritation.
✓ Ensure proper positioning and secure the catheter to reduce
movement.
✓ Regularly check and adjust the catheter for comfort.
✓ Consider prescribing antispasmodic medication if spasms are
persistent.
Based on the above case, analyze which measures are correctly or incorrectly spoken. Write C for the
correct expression and I for the incorrect expression.
To avoid
1. “To make sure the occurrence of bladder spasms, we need to pay attention to some [ I ]
details.”
2. “To ensure a minimum irritation in the bladder lining, we will use the smallest size [ ]
catheter.”
3. “To help prevent bladder spasms, the catheter should always be in a proper position [ ]
with minimum movement.”
4. “It’s crucial that we regularly check and adjust the catheter to reduce the possibility of [ ]
having bladder spasms.”
5. “In order to take the antispasmodic medication as the prescription if the spams are [ ]
persistent.”
2. Urine Leakage Around the Catheter
Leakage can occur if the catheter is blocked, if there are bladder contractions, or if
the catheter size is too small. Improper catheter positioning may also contribute.
Prevention:
✓ Regularly check for kinks or blockages in the tubing.
✓ Ensure the catheter is the correct size and type for the patient.
✓ Monitor urine flow and empty the drainage bag when it is two-thirds full.
✓ Encourage regular catheter maintenance to prevent sediment buildup.
