feet on a towel on erev Yom Kippur and use 29. In the mishna (Yoma 73b), R’ Eliezer
that same towel to wipe his face in the permits a kallah (bride) to wash her face on
morning (Magen Avraham). Yom Kippur so that she remains attractive to
her [new] husband. The Chachamim disagree,
              27. The gemara (Yoma 77b) says that one however, since the gemara later (78b)
may wade across a river on Yom Kippur to go
visit his rebbe or to go learn in the beis discusses the opinion of R’ Eliezer, many
rishonim (Rif, Rosh, Ramban, and others) rule
medrash and this does not violate the leniently and this is indeed the ruling of
prohibition of bathing on Yom Kippur. The
Shulchan Aruch codifies this as halacha and Shulchan Aruch. See however the Bach who
hesitates relying on this since the Ritz Gei’us,
extrapolates this leniency to include any other
mitzva. He may also return home afterwards, S’mag, and others rule like the Chachamim.
The Chayei Adam here expresses another
because if he wouldn’t be able to, he might hesitation; over the years, more and more
not go in the first place. Chazal also permitted
him to cross through the river in order to piyutim have been added to the tefilos and a
husband isn’t home during the day to see his
protect his produce, but did not extend this
leniency to include returning afterwards (Yoma wife anyway. Accordingly, there would seem to
be little basis to allow a kallah to wash her

              28. See above, note 21. rules accordingly.
