Chayei Adam - K’lal 146 - Laws of the Succah

the] walls, he must be careful not to leave four amos. Nevertheless, even if [he
leaves] less than four tefachim, he should not sit under it, as above siman 20. 110

]23[ If one left a gap of air between the walls and the s’chach, horizontally, 111 it
is kosher if [the space] is less than three tefachim since we employ [the rule of]
lavud and we look at it as if its walls are attached to the s’chach. 112 However, if he
left a gap measuring more than three tefachim, the succah is posul because [it is
as if] the succah has no wall, and we can’t say it is a bent wall since there is only
              air. 113

]24[ If [a succah] has a gap of less than three tefachim right next to a section of
posul s’chach measuring less than four tefachim, the two do not combine to
invalidate [the succah]. 114 Therefore, if one places posul s’chach in an area of air
measuring more than three tefachim, he has rendered the succah kosher, 115 but
only in a large succah. In a small succah which measures only seven by seven
tefachim, if the two combined measure three tefachim [or more], they invalidate
              the succah. 116

]25[ If [the succah has] posul s’chach measuring two tefachim, and another two
tefachim of posul s’chach, separated by a gap measuring less than three tefachim,
it is questionable; since we say that a space less than three tefachim is closed by
lavud. Perhaps we say that it is like the two [areas of] posul s’chach combine
together, and it is like there is an area measuring four tefachim of posul s’chach. 117

                                                        םדו רשב
section of posul s’chach measuring three as a bent wall, which must meet the s’chach
tefachim is significant enough to detract from within four amos of the s’chach.
the succah. Therefore, it is not valid unless the
succah measures at least seven by seven 111. Meaning that the s’chach is neither
tefachim without including it. (Rishonim, flush against the wall, nor is it suspended
Shulchan Aruch) above it (in which case we would apply the
rule of gud asik, see above, note 28, and the
              110. Whether the house is covered with succah would be kosher). Rather it lies at a
ordinary planks of wood or with shingles, they ninety degree angle from the wall, but only
are not valid for s’chach and therefore function begins several inches away from it.
