Chayei Adam - K’lal 146 - Laws of the Succah

However, if the two posul areas don’t measure four tefachim, we don’t consider
the gap between them as if it is filled with invalid s’chach, as we only say that
lavud would connect the two invalid areas, but not that the space separating
them should be [considered as] filled in. 118

]26[ If one covered his succah with iron spits or similar materials which are not
kosher for s’chach, if they don’t measure four tefachim wide and he doesn’t place
four tefachim of them together in one place, 119 [even] if he leaves identical space
between them and fills the space with kosher s’chach, it is still not valid since it is
impossible to be exact and fill in the entire area with kosher s’chach. 120 As such, it
results in a majority of invalid s’chach. However, if he places slightly more kosher
s’chach [than posul] it is valid, but only in a large succah; in a small succah,
however, [he must make sure that] there is less than three tefachim of these spits
              in a single place. 121

]27[ Under extenuating or pressing circumstances, one may cover his succah
with planks, as above in siman 16. 122 If one’s house is covered with planks without

question is left unresolved and is codified in since there is an area of posul s’chach which
Shulchan Aruch as a case of doubt. Since it is measures four tefachim, as above siman 20.

when one is otherwise unable to remedy the if one covers his succah with metal spits, but
situation, one should use a different succah. If leaves a gap the same size as them between
none is available, he should eat in this succah, each, the succah is kosher if he fills the space
but without reciting a beracha (Bikurei Yaakov, with kosher s’chach. The gemara compares this
Mishna Berura). to a case where breeches in a wall measure
the same as the wall itself, and challenges the
