Chayei Adam - K’lal 147 - Laws of Sitting in the Succah

]10[ This is all on the first night. On the second night, however, if it rains, it is
                                     68
proper to wait as well, but one who does not want to wait, should make kiddush
and eat his meal inside and then eat a k’zayis in the succah, but not say the
                                              69
beracha of leisheiv ba’succah, and not shehecheyanu, but rather rely on the
shehecheyanu he said the first night. 70

]11[ It is for this reason, that some say that on the first night one is obligated
[to eat in the succah] even if he is distressed and even if it rains, that although
during the rest of Succos one who doesn’t have a succah and is troubled by going
to eat in his friend’s succah would be exempt from succah, nevertheless, on the
first night, if it rained and then stopped yet his succah is still wet and dirty but he
has a friend with a retractable roof over his succah, he must go to [eat in] his
                                                                      71
friend’s succah even though he is distressed by this. Nevertheless, since there
are those who rule that if it rains one is exempt even on the first night, if so, he
shouldn’t make a beracha there unless he is not distressed by it. It would seem to
me that he could bring himself to an obligation by going in to fulfill the mitzva
with joy and make a beracha, as this is unlike one who is distressed by the rain or
illness, because that does not depend on him, but rather everyone is distressed
by this, and therefore in that case it is forbidden to recite a beracha and his is
called a ‘hedyot’, since Heaven tried to stop him from [from performing the
mitzva]. [However,] discomfort which depends on him, if he is not distressed by it,
why should he be exempt? [After all,] many people go to eat in their friends’
              homes. 72
                                                        םדו רשב

second day of yom tov is observed out of house, making sure to eat a k’zayis in the
doubt (see above, Hilchos Rosh Hashana, K’lal succah at the end of the meal, in deference to
139 note 88 for an explanation), the same those who agree with the Rosh (Elya Rabba,
halachos should apply on the second night as Taz, Mishna Berura).
                                                                             אמ

that one can completely rely on the opinion of exempt, as above.
