Chayei Adam - K’lal 147 - Laws of Sitting in the Succah

not recite ‘leisheiv ba’succah’. He should eat a k’zayis in the succah, and eat the
remainder of his meal inside. Nevertheless, he should wait afterwards until
midnight to see if it stops raining, and if it does, he should go back out to the
                                                                             62
succah and eat a k’zayis there, and recite leisheiv ba’succah. Alternatively, he can
eat the entire meal including kiddush inside, and say the shehecheyanu on the yom
tov, then wait until chatzos and eat a k’zayis in the succah, and if it stopped raining

ba’succah. Nevertheless, since there is a dispute among the poskim, as some say
the mitzva of matza is all night, and if so, the same applies to succah, and since it is
a matter of Torah law, it is proper to wait all night [to see] if the rain stops, and
                                               64
then eat a k’zayis in the succah. Even still, if he is distressed and wants to go to
sleep, it would appear that he could, for either way [he can], because according to
those who hold that one who is distressed is obligated [on the first night], the
same applies to eating in the rain, and he already ate, and according to those who
hold that one who is mitzta’eir is patur, if so, he is exempt anyway. Nevertheless, if
it stops raining, he is obligated, for perhaps he holds that the mitzva applies all
night long. Still, since he is distressed by [not being able to] sleep, he may go to
sleep and there is no obligation to wake him. Even if one wants to be stringent and
                                                                                                   66

wake up, he is called a “hedyot” and it is forbidden for him to sit in the succah.
Nevertheless, if he fights off sleep and it stops raining and then he eats in the
succah, he fulfills a positive commandment. If one did not eat in the succah [on the
first] night, he recites a shehecheyanu when he eats there the next day. 67
