                 German West Africa
“ German West Africa (Deutsch-Westafrika) was a rarely used designation for the German
colonies in West Africa between 1884 and 1919. The term was normally used for the

territories of Cameroon and Togo. German West Africa was not an administrative unit.
However, in trade and in the vernacular, the term was sometimes in use. “

                  Belgian Congo Free State

“ The Congo Free State, also known as the Independent State of the Congo (French: État
indépendant du Congo), was a large state in Central Africa from 1885 to 1908. It was
privately owned by Leopold II of Belgium (not by the government of Belgium, of which he

was the constitutional monarch). Leopold was able to procure the region by convincing
other Eurasian states at the Berlin Conference on Africa that he was involved in

humanitarian and philanthropic work and would not tax trade.

Under Leopold II's administration, the Congo Free State became one of the greatest
