You often have the choice between using a hand microphone with a transmit

button or using the built-in microphone in the headset.

If the microphone in the headset is used, you must press a transmit button,
which is usually located in or on the steering wheel.

               3.4.2 Radio range

How far can you actually transmit with an aircraft radio, someone might ask.

The range of our transmissions via the aircraft radio increases as the altitude

increases, and the radio waves propagate in straight lines. Therefore, a “line of

sight” is required between the station and the aircraft.

You can calculate the range by finding the square root of the flight altitude in

feet and multiplying this by 1.23. The number you find is then the range in NM.

               Example:

If you fly at 2500 feet, the range is approximately 61 NM (50 times 1.23).

                              √2500 x 1,23 = 61,5 NM

The theory test will often have 2 questions on range, so remember the formula!
