Everyone’s Agenda Put Themselves First
There is another important element of agendas; everyone’s agenda has
them at the top of the page. Oh, there are few exceptions- times of crisis
and a few unbelievably altruistic people, but most of the time everyone
puts themselves first.
Other may be close to the top. Children may be close to the
top….sometimes faith and commitment to cause.
But generally, #1 is number one.
This means we want to communicate their way for their benefit. They are
doing things for their reasons, not ours.
Once we support their agenda in their way, we can have effective
communication.
My secondary agenda at this writing is to complete this manuscript.
Anybody communicating with me right now that supports this mission will
have good communications with me.
An interruption that is brief and to the point will not cause conflict.
A call from my editor will not cause conflict.
An interruption for small talk will cause problems. That’s not on my
agenda right now. But Monday, after a football weekend, I might have
small talk on my mind. That will be on my agenda then.
And my primary agenda in both instances is me; I am the central character
in both agendas.
The problem comes with inconsistent agendas.
