Conclusion
The red porridge is significant to the Javanese society in Malaysia and Indonesia. It is widely known
and is now still a favourite amongst Javanese other locals. The red porridge can preserve its
uniqueness because of its association with tradition and culture. The Javanese society appreciates red
porridge as a traditional food because the ingredients are cheap and economical. The basic ingredients
of red porridge are not in the category of authentic thus, even though times have changed the
ingredients can easily be obtained.
In addition, the preparation method is simple and time-saving make it always in demand by many
Javanese people, from then until now. Even though the methods of preparing red porridge are simple
and easy but one needs to have passion and patience to get a smooth texture and delicious taste of the
food. Javanese society is known as a society that is particular with ethics and exemplary model that
stretch from politeness and tolerance to preparing food. They appreciate the brotherhood among them
and thus creates social harmony.
The goal of assimilating to Malay culture is not to eliminate the originality of the Javanese culture
instead it is to sustain the culture itself and at the same time allow the community to live peacefully
despite practising different cultures. In maintaining their community identity, the red porridge (bubur
merah) acts handsomely as the bridge to an unspoken language by the Javanese Malay that amalgamates
the characteristics mentioned above. This paper has its limitations as the literature on red porridge is
extremely sparse and only the elderly people or mature adults are aware of the existence of this unique
food. It is suggested that future research can explore more on red porridge about food tourism and
entrepreneurship to ensure this food identity is maintained at all times.
