then rinse the mop by dunking it a couple of times,
squeeze and repeat as many times as needed to clean the
entire floor. Then either rinse and really squeeze the
water out of the mop head and “dry” mop the floor or
use a squeegee to remove as much water as possible.
Repeat in the runs if necessary. Some clinics will want
you to spray the runs down with warm water before mop-
ping so you don’t smear feces and urine around! The last
things to clean are the light switch, doorknob, front and
back of the door, and the window to the ward.
Some clinics will use a second mop bucket filled with
just water and each time the mop needs to be rinsed it
is rinsed in the clear water and squeezed first before
going into the bucket of disinfectant. This method
reduces the amount of organic material introduced to
the disinfectant solution. This is only an issue if the dis-
infectant being used is deactivated by organic material.
When finished with the wards, the mop head should be
removed and put in the laundry. Hot water, detergent,
and bleach should be used as per your washing machine
instructions to launder the mop head. The area where
the mop bucket is left should also be cleaned and disin-
fected. The mop bucket should be refilled with prop-
erly diluted disinfectant and a clean mop head placed
on the mop. This is so it will be ready for the next
