A major element of Hazel's strategy was the development
of a web presence not simply to inform about the products
but rather to also to build social awareness of the values
and ethics associated with the company.
The Set-Up
Since the rabbit industry is not as developed as most other
agricultural enterprises, it is generally considered a high-
risk investment.
Prior to investing in facilities, equipment, and breeding
stock, Hazel determined to assess where her market was
and how many rabbits it could support.
In the UK the rabbit industry is fairly small scale with
around 250,000 to 1 million a year being reared for food.
In France this figure is around 50 million a year and in the
EU as whole it is over 350 million.
Initial Investment
High Initial Investment -- (Building, cages, equipment, and
breeding stock.) however, expansion is much simpler than
other livestock alternatives because a large range of
existing facilities can be modified for rabbits and land
requirements are low.
