My "Oh Brother!" series expresses the wonder and delight of growing up with four
brothers. Like the Weasley siblings in Harry Potter my brothers and I were a tight-knit
unit. Five best friends, partners in crime, half a baseball team, a small marching band -
unconditional love. We grew up on four continents in six countries, spoke three
languages - moved 11 times in 12 years. Our playgrounds included the Temple of
Hercules, the Cave of Patriarchs, Hannibal's Hill and the roman ruins of Rabat. We were
encouraged to explore the neighborhood, scout the souks, investigate, question, learn,
create. Having four brothers has its benefits. I can pound a hammer, operate the drill,
and hold a jig saw steady. I'm not afraid of snakes or salamanders or spiders - wiggly
things they might have snuck into my sheets. I love my brothers.
