DECADE: 1970s
Beginning at a very early age, drawing was my art. It has developed into many various
art forms over my 80 years. It is in my blood. I began working with stitchery at 17 in an
art class in high school. Later I explored the gifts of art through crochet, fabric forms,
stitching. In 73' thru 76', various gallery pieces were displayed in annual Creative
Stitchery Exhibits (later became FASA). I truly enjoy working with my hands to create
embroidery, weaving, crochet forms and art clothing.
My inspiration for Substratum is to push further into free hand crochet, a non-patterend
crochet style. Unknowingly, I used this technique in 1973, under Mary Heickman at SW
Craft Center. However, it was a typical technique in European art. It was not used in the
United States, until recently it found its way to us by way of creative knitting. The
materials used for my free hand crochet are typically, yarn (thick, thin...acrylic thru wool,
ribbon, stripped fabric, paper, shreds of nature). In past I have created hanging Gallery
pieces, shawls, scarfs, sculpted art pieces and small purses. Many are made for
charitable organizations to sell and for personal gifts.
