ACS honors Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson for SIRTURO® (bedaquiline),
the first treatment with a novel mechanism of action against tuberculosis (TB). Bedaquiline
selectively inhibits the mycobacterial enzyme that produces ATP in TB bacteria, depriving the
bacteria of its energy source and effectively killing the pathogens.
Koen Andries
Koen Andries is a VP Scientific Fellow at Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson.
Andries holds a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM), and obtained a Ph.D. at the University
of Ghent, Belgium in 1975. He continued his career at the university until 1982, when he started
working at Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson in Beerse, Belgium.
Jerome Guillemont
Jerome Guillemont is a Senior Scientific Director-Fellow, Medicinal Chemistry at Janssen
Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson and is co-responsible with biologists of the
respiratory franchise for infectious diseases. He holds a DEA in Organic Chemistry and a Ph.D.
from the University of Rouen, France.
Anil Koul
Anil Koul is the Vice President for Global Public Health and Infectious Diseases Discovery at
Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals. He has more than 20 years of experience in drug
discovery, development and scientific innovation by serving in both private industry, as well as,
heading one of the premier public-sector biotech institutions. He holds a B.S. and M.S. from
Delhi University, India, and Ph.D. from Max Planck institute in Germany and Delhi University.
