Page 16 - FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE; EXPLORING GOD’S UNIVERSE
P. 16
Genesis 2:15 ‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and
take care of it.’
God has given man the responsibility to care for the earth as he gave Adam the
responsibility to care for/steward the Garden of Eden.
Caring for the earth involves understanding more about it.
Through field-work different aspects of an area can be studied and areas contrasted.
Way to Work (Means)
This aspect of the project could be approached in different ways:-
a) Studying the local environment with several field-work days out of the classroom.
b) Studying the area in which a residential trip is planned.
c) Contrasting a) and b)
Preparatory work can be done before the trip(s), the presentation of which should be
decided by the staff involved beforehand. This could be a folder, file, computer
programme or wall-display, etc. Digital photographs would be useful. Follow-up,
likewise, will take various forms.
The children should be encouraged to approach it bearing in mind the above verses.
They could be postured to pray for the area(s) before and during the visit(s).
Stewardship of an area should involve praying for the people who live in it.
Questionnaires could be devised to gather certain information. Visits could be made to
museums, shops, factories, schools, to see features of the landscape, churches or other
notable places.
Areas of study: -
1. Location of the area(s) using Ordnance Survey maps, noting significant places.
www.maps.google.com
2. Describe/contrast the landscape(s). Rural or urban, features of the landscape, use of
photographs, maps, etc
3. Investigate how the area has changed over time and the causes for the change.
Eg buildings, transport, use of land, cultural diversity, industry
4. Population of the area or nearby cities through the ages.
