brought to Britain by ordinary people like traders. Britons travelling abroad also may have
become Christians then shared their faith on their return home.
5. Tell the story of Columba starting with this poem said to be written by Columba: -
Alone with none but Thee, my God, I journey on my way;
What need I fear when Thou art near,
Oh King of night and day?
More safe am I within Thy hand
Than if a host did round me stand.

The worksheet could be use to tell the story then the children could review it by filling in the
spaces. More able children could find out more about Columba by using books or the Internet.
6. One or more of the stories of Patrick, Augustine and Aidan could be shared. The children
could either use the worksheets or write their own stories about one or more of these
pioneers.

7. End the lessons by sharing information the children have discovered. Pray for any
missionaries abroad who the children know to be sharing the gospel with people who may
never have heard about Jesus. Explain that not everyone is called abroad but that we are all
missionaries if we share the gospel with our immediate family, friends and neighbours.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have been enlightened as to how the gospel came to Britain.
2. They will hopefully be inspired to pray for themselves and missionaries abroad who are
sharing the Good News today.
