Lesson 3

UNITY, DIVERSITY AND INTERDEPENDENCE IN EUROPE

            Truth to Teach

2 Chronicles 30:12 ‘Also in Judah, the hand of the Lord was on the people to
give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his

officials had ordered, following the word of the Lord.’

Psalm 133 ‘How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in
unity………For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even

                                     for evermore.’

God wants us to appreciate one another’s strengths and weaknesses that we may support
one another and live alongside one another in peace.

            Way to Work

                  1. By question and answer, review the previous lessons.

                  2. If possible, show a video of the contrasting landscapes of Europe, discussing
climatic differences, different people groups, religions, etc.

                  3. Talk about the way in which various nations are governed- monarchs,

                           presidents, etc.

                  4. Look up the following verses with the children – Psalm 66:7,
Psalm 67:3-4, Psalm 99:2, noting God’s ultimate rulership over every nation.

5 Look up the words – unity, diversity and interdependence in a dictionary and
discuss how they relate to Europe.

                   6. Read 2 Chron 30:12 and Ps 133 to illustrate the importance of unity. Refer

to the possible advantages and disadvantages in being part of the EEC.

                  7. Give out the worksheet, atlases and books for the children to do some of

their own research about Europe. First put the names of the countries
represented on the sheet on the board so that the children can identify the
maps, name them, draw the flag of the country and fill the other boxes with
pictures or information about the nation. Draw their attention to the many
differences between us. (Norway, Romania, France, Germany, Spain)

These nations represent north, south, west and east Europe.
