THE JEWISH SABBATH – SABBAT

            Truth to Teach (Source)

Exodus 20:8 ‘Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.’

Luke 4:16 ‘Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on
the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue, as was his custom.’

                Deuteronomy 6:4-9 The Shema

 God commands us to keep a Sabbath day each week.

 Some faith groups celebrate the Sabbath on a different day to a Sunday.

 Jesus did his Father’s work on a Sabbath day.

 It is good for us to keep one day a week as a Sabbath to rest.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review the previous lesson.

                2. Let the children complete the worksheet.

                3. Gather back to talk about the Sabbath and how we spend our Sundays.
Discuss the benefits of having one day of rest a week. What do we call rest?
Is it doing nothing at all? What did Jesus do on the Sabbath?

                4. Describe a Jewish Sabbath day or invite a Jewish person in to share about it.

                5. The children could copy out the Shema, the prayer in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 as a
handwriting exercise as well as to stress the importance of the passage.

Talk about this being the reason why Christian schools are set up so that
children can be taught about God’s will and his ways. Jewish schools are set
up too so that the next generation can be taught Judaism.

                6. Describe the order of service for a synagogue:-
