Let the children suggest people in the Bible who served God faithfully, even
though they were not perfect.
3. Remind the children that the Jews only used the Old Testament because they
do not believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Emphasise the importance of
praying for them that they will realise that Jesus is the Son of God. Jews who
have been born again are called Messianic Jews.
4. Explain that the children will be selecting an OT character to study over the
next two lessons to show how they responded to God in their hearts. Eg
• Esther Esther 1-10
• Daniel Daniel 1-6
• Ruth Ruth 1-4
• Gideon Judges 6-8
• Jonah Jonah 1-4
• Josiah 2 Kings 22-23, 30
Bible story books could be used for less able children.
Encourage the children to use the notes sheet before writing their full
version. This could be done in an English lesson for Creative Writing.
5. Go through the example of Samson. Less able children could perhaps use him
as their character.
6. Outline expectations of amount, neatness of presentation, time scale, etc.
Stress that none of these characters were perfect but God looked on their
heart attitudes as he does with us.
7. Display the finished writings so that the children can appreciate and offer
constructive criticism to each other. Some children may like to extend their
work into an assembly on the OT character.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have learnt about one OT character in detail and have
appreciated that no-one is perfect; we all make mistakes but God looks at our
hearts.
