1. Father takes three loaves of unleavened bread and places them in a white linen
envelope, which has three compartments.
2. Father removes the middle loaf (flat, marked with stripes from being grilled,
pierced with hole from cooking), wraps it in a separate white linen and hides it.
The four questions
Youngest family member asks the father four questions:-
a) Why is this night distinguished from all other nights?
On this night we eat only unleavened bread.
b) On all other nights we any kind of herbs, but on this night only bitter herbs.
Why?
c) On all other nights we do not dip but tonight we dip twice. Why?
d) On this night we all recline in our chairs at the table. Why?
Father chants Haggadah, the Passover book, which answers the questions:-
a) Unleavened bread = purity as leaven is sin.
b) Bitter herbs = bitterness of slavery in Egypt
c) Dipping = Israel going into the Red Sea and coming out unharmed; Egyptian
army followed and were eaten by the waves.
d) Reclining chairs = Jews are no longer slaves, but free.
The Exodus
1. Four days before the Passover, people selected young male lamb without
blemish.
2. Blood was sprinkled on each house.
3. Angel of death passed over and the Jews were spared by the blood of the lamb.
4. Lamb symbolised by unbroken shank bone of lamb.
5. Roasted egg = hardness of Pharaoh’s heart.
6. Easter – biblical name of feast day is First Fruits
- Jesus’ resurrection first for all church.
