e) Everyone says the Shema – ‘Shema Yisrael Adonay Elohenu
Adonay Ehad.’
f) The Amidah is a prayer said by everyone as they stand and face
the Ark.
g) The Ark is opened and the Torah is carried around the synagogue
to the Bimah. As it passes, the men touch the Torah with the
tassels (Tzitzit) of their prayer shawls (Tallit).
h) The Torah is opened on the Bimah and the congregation gather
around as that day’s portion is read, often by seven different
people.
A silver or ivory Yad, or pointer is used to point to the words.
The whole Torah will be read over the course of a year.
i) More prayers are said before the Torah is returned to the Ark.
j) There may be more readings from the Prophets (Nevi’im) or a
sermon is preached by the Rabbi.
k) Another Amidah is said then the holy prayer, or Kaddish.
‘Magnified and sanctified be His great Name in the world which He
hath created according to His will. May He establish His Kingdom
during your life.’
l) The service lasts for 2-4 hours then the people return home.
7) Let the children share similarities and differences with our church services.
8.) End by stressing the importance of honouring and respecting other faiths.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have been exposed to a different faith and will have been
postured to respect other people’s faith.
