VICTORIANS AT LEISURE

            Truth to Teach (Source)

                Genesis 2:2       ‘By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing;
so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.’

 Whilst work is good, God planned that we should have rest and relaxation too.

 Longer working hours, especially for the poor, gave little time for
entertainment but most people found time for some leisure activities.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review previous lessons.

                2. Read the above verse and ask the children which hobbies/leisure activities
they enjoy today. Talk about leading a balanced life with work and leisure.

                3. Have a display of balls (tennis, rugby, football and cricket), and other items
representing Victorian leisure pursuits (see worksheet 1). Discuss with the
                    children the hobbies they represent.

Talk about the Victorians love of reading and the good authors who wrote at
                    that time. Eg

                           Lewis Carroll ‘Alice in Wonderland’
Jules Verne ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’

                           Anna Sewell ‘Black Beauty’
                           Robert Louis Stephenson ‘Treasure Island’
                                                        ‘Kidnapped’

                           Charles Dickens ‘Christmas Carol’
                                                        ‘Oliver Twist’
                                                        ‘David Copperfield’
                                                        ‘Tale of Two Cities’
                                                        ‘Great Expectations’

                           Rudyard Kipling ‘Jungle Book’
                           Mark Twain ‘Huckleberry Finn’
                                                        ‘’Adventures of Tom Sawyer’
                           Charles Kingsley ‘Water Babies’
