Seaside Towns
From Victorian times certain seaside towns began to
become popular such as Bournemouth, Blackpool, Bognor
Regis, Skegness, Scarborough and Southend. Families
went to the seaside because the bracing air was believed
to be healthy. Nobody went to sun-bathe, this was not
fashionable and in Victorian times most people went to
the beach fully clothed. Doctors claimed they could
detect special medicinal properties in the air and sea
water of different resorts. As the seaside became more
popular larger seaside towns had entertainment such as
music-hall, variety, dancing, zoos, theatres, aquaria,
lagoons, pleasure gardens, and exhibitions.
These pages focus on Cromer, a seaside town in North
Norfolk. In the 1800s and 1900s Cromer became very
popular as a seaside holiday resort set in the Norfolk
countryside. In Cromer today you can still see evidence
of Cromer's past as a holiday destination and many
people still visit during the holiday season.
