Enjoying Words

        More able children can be encouraged to think of using interesting words as well, e.g.

                         A long –haired cat
                         Purred softly on a mat

        Children could illustrate their sheets accordingly after they have finished all their sentences.

        Week 2 - Love is…

        Love: Jesus demonstrated the Father’s love to us.  Love is essentially something you do.  ‘Let us love …with
        actions and in truth.’ (1 John 3: 18)
        This is essentially a list of ways you can show love to others.  The children should start a new line for each new
        thought, and begin it with a capital letter.

                                Love is …
                               Sharing a hug with a friend
                               Letting my sister play with my doll
                               Tidying my bedroom for mummy
                               Giving money to poor people
                               Picking up litter in the playground
                               Love is being like Jesus
                               For he is love

        The last two lines could be used by everyone as an ending.

        Some children may want to write about particular situations, e.g. ‘When Sarah picked up Sally’s coat’, the
        children may need to help them shape an idea, e.g. ‘Picking up someone’s coat’.

        Encourage variety – not always ‘someone’, but a friend, my brother, a younger child, etc.

        Occasionally a child finds it hard to write in a structure like this and may write very independently but not quite
        as asked.  It is probably best to accept their work for what it is.

        Week 3 - Thank you God for making me ‘me’.

        Unity and Diversity: God has made each of us different, because he wanted it that way.  Link with the song, ‘If
        I were a butterfly.’  (It is also so that we can appreciate and help one another.)

        This is a good free writing activity as it provides a chance to get to know more about each child as well as to
        assess each child’s writing ability. Use the blackboard to draw picture prompts and write up key words covering
        areas such as:-

                 •     family members-  brother, sister
                 •     pets
                 •     birthday
                 •     my house
                 •     favourite food
                 •     things I like
                 •     things I do not like
