Enjoying Words
Week 4 - Retelling a Bible story
This is often linked with a story the children have heard recently in assembly. It might be a parable, or the
story of a healing. If a character like Joseph is being studied, divide the class, assigning different parts of the
story to different children, or limit everyone to a particular part. This is an opportunity to encourage the
children to use interesting words and phrases, as they are familiar with the events and do not have to make
these up.
Week 5 - Writing about a favourite possession/ thing
Love: A favourite thing will hold unique significance to its owner. Each of us is special to God.
Link with Schnitzel von Krumm and his basket. (Week 4) This basket was not special to anyone else, but to
Schnitzel von Krumm there was no other basket quite like it. Perhaps they have a blanket or chair at home,
which is very special to them. Ask the children to write about it. They will need to tell you: -
• What colour is it? What size? What is it made of?
• Where did it come from?
• Why do you like it?
• Any special memories? I remember once it…
• What do you plan to do with it?
Week 6 - October Days – an acrostic poem
Wonder and Worship: God faithfully brings about the changing seasons, which he has created; each is beautiful
in its time.
Ensure that the children have had time on a previous occasion to appreciate aspects of autumn. Perhaps have
some relevant pictures pinned up in view of the children. Write the letters of October Days down the side of
the board and work together to find possible words to start a line. Write these up on the board. The children
can then make their own selection from the ideas on the board and construct the rest of the line. Possible
words are: -
O orange…
C conkers…carpet…
T trees…
O orchards… overflowing…
B bonfires… berries… birds…
E evenings…evergreen… everyone…
R red… rosy… rakes…
D days… darker…
A animals…
Y You O Lord have created___________ (beautiful, wonderful,
colourful, changing)
S Seasons.
When illustrated, these poems could form part of a seasonal display.
